Summer is a short season in Toronto, so when those warm sunny days do come along you have to seize the opportunity. My friends and I did just that and headed to Centre Island for a little biking.
I love taking the ferry over to the Islands. It’s a short ride but you get such an amazing view of the city –plus really great photo opportunities. You can take the ferry to three different docks on the Island – Hart Island, Centre Island and Hanlan’s Post. The most popular drop off point is Centre Island and this is where I went.
I’ve been to the Islands a few times before, mostly when I was younger. Its kind a cool place to visit because its like a mini vacation from the city. There are beaches around the island – some clothing optional – a lot great history, green parks and just plenty of adventure.
My friends and I rented bikes from Centre Island and proceeded to make our way to Hanlan’s Island. It’s a really easy ride because the paths are paved and wide enough to share with other bikers and pedestrians. There are great things to stop and see such as old lighthouses and views of the city. We stopped a few times to check things out and have Vietnamese Subs for lunch. I highly recommend packing a lunch or some snacks. The Islands is the perfect picnic destination. If you feel like making your stay longer bring food to barbeque. There are coal barbeques all around the park with tons of picnic tables.
After lunch we headed to the Toronto Island residential community on Ward’s Island. In case you didn’t know, there is a small population of people who actually live on the Island’s all year round. I can imagine living on the Island’s in the summer, but I think the winters could be tough.
The homes here have so much character and remind me a little of The Shire from Lords of The Rings. I love that the homes are so eclectic and colorful.
If you get the chance to visit Toronto, or even if you are a resident of Toronto but haven’t had the chance to make it over to the Islands, take the afternoon to explore. It’s a wonderful short trip and worth the ferry ride over.
